Asheville for Adventure Lovers
I am bravely posting a story about Asheville for Adventure Lovers before my upcoming weekend in this lovely land. It’s a foodie and beer-lovers town, but it’s also such an amazing natural and cultural destination to experience. And there is no better time to research some of the opportunities for exciting outdoor activity than BEFORE you load up the car and drive! I am not being rewarded in any way by the companies I suggest. You, however, will be rewarded in the time saved by having the information all in one place when you plan your own journey.
Number One has to be the Blue Grass Parkway, simply because it meanders through this special area and serves as a means to reach some beautiful hiking trails. Choose one of the trails in the link above, or drive until you see a trail that looks inviting! Either way, be sure you leave your car with plenty of water, comfy trail shoes, and a few snacks to keep the energy level up. If you have a convertible for the drive, even better! For a chance to have your photos featured, use the hash tag #visitasheville for a chance to be featured on the Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Number Two It’s all the rage, and a great workout! White Squirrel Paddle Boards offer several different tours either on a lake or the French Broad River. You can bring your own or rent, and it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors while trying something new.
Number Three Music fans rejoice! Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina is a website from heaven. Do you know this music heritage? In words straight from the website,
“The North Carolina mountains and foothills abound with the music that was born and bred in these mountains–lively strains of bluegrass, old-time, gospel and blues music, and the sound of dancing feet in venues large and small, indoors and outdoors, at festivals, music halls, and parks.” Enjoy!
Number Four Asheville Treetops Adventure Park has 60 climbing, zipping, walking, jumping, swinging, and rappelling challenges anchored to over 30 trees and towering poles, and is tucked into a wooded park just a few minutes from downtown Asheville. You can also zip line, mountain bike of trails, do a “Quick Jump”, or get your thrills white water rafting. Get your blood pumping!
Number Five French Broad Chocolates Yes, your reward for expending all that energy is one of my favorite adventures of all…CHOCOLATE! Okay, yes, this one is indoor, but check out this Chocolate Lounge in town and leave room in the car to bring some home so you can savor your adventures a bit longer. Share them with the poor folks back home that didn’t join the fun. Grin. I cannot WAIT for this one.
And 70 more ideas for you all in one place! Courtesy of the Romantic Asheville website, there is enough here to give you activities for a full year or more.
Please let me know if this is helpful to you. I would truly enjoy hearing your stories when you return. I will be sharing my personal story when I return (I will be there as you read this with my Cincinnati Ski Club.) It has been many, many years since I was there (my children were young, and we toured the Biltmore Estate.) Asheville, I cannot wait to see you again!
Peace, Bobbie
